Dr. Art Davis - Fan Club

History of the Fan Club:
The Dr. Art Davis Fan Club was formed in October 1990 by university students and other fans in appreciation for his unselfish mentoring, counseling and motivation. Oftentimes, he would give them free tickets to concerts and spend time tutoring them. The purpose of the club was to promote the music of Dr. Art Davis and to provide social functions for members. Dr. Art Davis performs in all musical idioms and club members are able to attend concerts in various settings. Dr. Davis later added emphasis on education.

The members gave a surprise birthday party on his December 5, 1990 birthday party and presented money for a scholarship. They said that the scholarship would be awarded to a full time student attending an accredited university or college. Since they considered Dr. Art a "Renaissance Man", they wanted no limits to college major. Thus, it could not be awarded only to psychology or music majors.

The next thing initiated was a quarterly newsletter—Bass-ically Speaking—to inform members of the Dr.’s musical events, club events, opportunities for community service and networking. These are all objectives and will continue, except the newsletter. In it’s place, articles will appear on the web site.

Scholarships continued to be awarded under the fan club for several years. Then, in 1993, Dr. Davis formed a tax-exempt organization—B.A.S.S. (Better Advantages for Students and Society)—in order to encourage donors to donate more money for scholarships and deduct the amount donated. A second scholarship fund was established in 1995 in honor of Dr. Davis’ wife Gladys, who passed away in November 1995, and who held the office of treasurer of the club and had been an inspiration to so many health care professionals. Both the Dr. Art Davis Scholarships and the Gladys Davis Memorial Scholarships are now awarded under the auspices of B.A.S.S.

In the years since its formation, the club has been effective in assisting with media relations, scholarship selections, fund raising and charitable events such as community service. The club is dedicated to encouraging to encouraging students to achieve their highest potential, networking and merging jazz and classical music fans, and to honor Dr. Davis for his numerous accomplishments.
