***The following are excerpts from reviews of various performances of Dr. Art Davis. The reviews were written by students in Dr. Art Davis' History of Jazz class at Orange Coast College in the fall semester of 1999.*** Ramiro Ortiz -- Highlights of the third and last evening of the fifth annual John Coltrane Tribute presented by Dr. Art Davis: Charles Owens displayed a skill level that allowed him to continue to play while taking apart his saxophone, choosing to end his solo by playing the reed...Doug Webb's clarinet play was exceptional...Phil Vieux, who flew in especially from New York to participate in the tribute, displayed a fresh and exciting style of play, particularly on the baritone...Nate Morgan's avante garde style piano solos were energetic, upbeat, and had spectators bouncing in their seats...Wilbee Fletcher seemed to laugh and have more fun than the others, controlled the tempo with crescendo-like rhythms on drums...Bassist Dr. Davis (a member of Coltrane's ensemble for ten years and ten albums) demonstrated why he is considered by many to be the best in the world today...Playing with a smile the entire evening, Davis showed legendary improvisational skills, with notes so deep that they vibrated throughout your body... In all the show was worth quite a bit more than the $12 admission. M-BAR AND GRILL--Ed Breckenridge ..."I have always loved technicality in music and had just been looking in the wrong place. Timing changes, speed, dynamics, music that emotes mood, I love it all. Jazz is seriously my answer...A double bass and a big grin on my face is a dream for me...Dr. Davis... got crazy with the high notes on his bass. While playing with the bow he even went beyond the fret board with his left hand. It was so cool to see innovation as a part of the improvisation...This was the most captivating part of the concert to me...so different...so mind blowing." LACMA--Mustafa Aziz "People from all over the world!...toddlers to the elderly...when... the concert was finished, none wanted to leave." LACMA--Keith Walker "I still couldn't believe the throngs of people that showed up...As long as (Dr. Art Davis) keeps turning out hits like 'Everybody's Doing It' and 'Art's Boogie', I'll keep an open mind!" PARISIAN ROOM--Tanta Ginting "I felt the chemistry between the players...I learned more by attending live performance than listening to cassettes or CDs...I want to learn (even) more about jazz...see more various styles of jazz." |
